Mathematics

Introductory Mathematics

Prerequisite: None, Credit: 1, Grades: 9-10, Weight: S

Study topics included in the first half of Algebra I with an emphasis on the coordinate plane, linear equations, direct variation, data analysis, matrices, systems of equations and polynomials. 

 

Occupational Math I, II and III

Prerequisite: Teacher Recommendation, Credit: 1 Per Course, Grades: 9-12, Weight: Modified

Occupational Math I, II and III are a series of courses designed to equip students with the Math competencies needed for independent living and successful employment.  Content standards include Math skills such as numerical operations, decimals, fractions, basic geometric concepts and basic calculator skills. Essential workplace competencies and applications are emphasized as well as independent living needs, such as budgeting, personal finance and banking skills.

 

Algebra I

Prerequisite: None, Credit: 1, Grades: 9-12, Weight: S

Study algebraic concepts that include operations with real numbers, polynomials, relations and functions, as well as creation and application of linear functions and relations, and an iintroduction to nonlinear functions.

 

Foundations of Geometry

Prerequisite: Algebra I, Credit: 1, Grades: 10-12, Weight: S 

Study topics included in the first half of Geometry with an emphasis on geometric figures, conditional statements, parallel and perpendicular lines, congruent triangles, relationships within triangles, quadrilaterals, as well as area.

 

Geometry

Prerequisite: Algebra I, Credit: 1, Grades: 9-12, Weight: S

Study geometric concepts building upon middle school topics.  Students will move from an inductive approach to deductive methods of proof in studying geometric figures.  Two and three-dimensional reasoning skills will be emphasized; students will also broaden their use of the coordinate plane to include transformations of geometric figures.

 

Geometry Honors

Prerequisite: 8th grade Algebra I or teacher recommendation, Credit: 1, Grades: 9-11, Weight: H

Cover the Geometry curriculum and extend concepts to include higher levels of critical thinking, problem analysis, as well as enrichment activities. 

 

Foundations of Algebra

Prerequisite: Geometry, Credit: 1, Grades: 10-12, Weight: S

Study topics included in the first half of Algebra II with an emphasis on equations and inequalities; linear relations and functions; data analysis; systems of equations and inequalities; matrices, polynomials, radical equations and functions; complex numbers; quadratic equations and functions; as well as polynomial equations and functions.  

 

Algebra II

Prerequisite: Geometry, Credit: 1, Grades: 10-12, Weight: S

Study advanced algebraic concepts, including functions, polynomials, rational expressions, complex numbers, systems of equations, inequalities and matrices.  Emphasis will be placed on practical applications and modeling.

 

Discrete Math Honors

Prerequisite: Algebra II, Credit: 1, Grades: 11-12, Weight: H 

Study the mathematics of networks, social choice and decision making.  Also, study the application of Matrix Arithmetic and Probability. In addition, applications and modeling will be central to this course.   

 

Advanced Functions & Modeling

Prerequisite: Algebra II, Credit: 1, Grades: 11-12, Weight: S 

Use your fourth year of Mathematics to study the concepts of statistics and functions.  This will fulfill the course requirement that is necessary for admission to a UNC School, while enabling you to broaden your knowledge of Mathematics to include applied Statistics and Functions.  However, this course should not replace, Pre-Calculus Honors.

 

Pre-Calculus Honors

Prerequisite: Algebra II Honors or Teacher Recommendation, Credit: 1, Grades: 11-12, Weight: H

Study Trigonometry, as well as advanced Algebra topics, Analytic Geometry, Sequences, Series, and Data Analysis.  Also included is an introduction to Limits and Elementary Derivatives.

 

Calculus I

Prerequisite: Pre-Calculus Honors, Credit: 1, Grades: 11-12, Weight: H

Begin with a study of the concepts of Calculus, including Functions, Limits, and Derivatives.  Strengthen skills and concepts from Pre-Calculus Honors with an emphasis on geometric, numerical, and analytical approaches.

 

Advanced Placement Calculus

Prerequisite: Pre-Calculus Honors, Credit: 1, Grade: 12, Weight: AP  

Develop an understanding of the concepts of Calculus to include Functions, Graphs, Limits, Derivatives and Integrals.  The course emphasizes the geometric, numerical, analytical and verbal expression of concepts, results and problems.                                                                                                                                                                   

 

Advanced Placement Statistics                                                                 Prerequisite: Pre-Calculus Honors, Credit: 1, Grade: 12, Weight: AP  

Students will study the major concepts and tools for collecting, analyzing and drawing conclusions from data.  They will observe patterns and departures from patterns; decide what and how to measure; produce models by using probability and simulation; then confirm models.
